DETENTION
Pay for detention is NOT guaranteed. In the event that detention is paid, it can take months to receive the money.
Most customers will pay detention AFTER TWO HOURS. If you have an appointment and are late, detention will most likely be denied. There are some customers and commodities that will not pay detention under any circumstances. Know what you are hauling so that you can set your expectations accordingly.
In order to have any hope of being paid detention on a load, these are the procedures that must be followed:
Be on time.
Document your on-time arrival by sending an “arrived” message by email.
30 MINUTES BEFORE detention time begins, an email (not a phone call) should be sent to the agent letting them know you are getting close to detention time.
When loading/unloading is finally complete, send the agent a message letting them know you are done.
WRITE YOUR IN AN OUT TIMES ON THE BILLS OF LADING and send a picture of the bills to the agent.
Wait. You might get paid, you might not. Make some kind of note in your spreadsheet that you are owed detention so that you can occasionally follow up about it. When you do get paid, mark it paid in your spreadsheet.
